Campus Safety in Focus: Student Reactions After Viral Assault Incident

The Atlanta campus community has been shaken by a widely shared video showing a Morehouse College student allegedly assaulting a Clark Atlanta University student outside off-campus housing. The video quickly spread on social media, sparking fear, anger, and a lot of conversation among students.

Walking around campus and listening to conversations in residence halls and lounges, students expressed concerns about their safety. Many mentioned feeling uneasy in areas around off-campus apartments, shuttle stops, and nighttime routes. Some students praised the campus safety measures in place, like shuttles and emergency apps, while others said they didn’t feel these resources were enough. A common theme was the desire for transparency  students want clear communication from CAU and Morehouse about what steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents.

On social media, students shared the video and offered support to the victim. Both schools quickly issued public statements condemning the assault and promising thorough investigations. CAU also highlighted campus safety resources, including the Panther Safe app, a 24/7 public safety hotline, and reminders about shuttle services.

This incident highlights the importance of exploring deeper issues around campus safety and student trust. A possible story could examine how safety measures at CAU and Morehouse are received by students, the role of social media in holding institutions accountable, and how these schools support students’ physical and mental well-being after violent incidents. This story isn’t just about a crime  it’s about community, accountability, and how students navigate safety in and around campus.

I recently subscribed to a free Substack newsletter called  Culture Study  by writer Anne Helen Petersen. It focuses on creativity, cultural trends, and the way communities influence the art we make.
